Waitrose wine team launches clearance sale

16 September, 2014

Waitrose has launched a sweeping clearance sale offering up to 50% off across 65 lines on its waitrosecellar.com site.

Waitrose has big plans to grow its online business after launching the site earlier this year and needs to clear stocks before moving to bigger premises.

The retailer uses delivery specialists iForce Ltd to meet orders but it needs to switch from its centre in Oxfordshire to a larger site in Northamptonshire.

The sale runs until September 26 and there is a minimum order if six bottles. Deals include Calvet Pouilly Fume reduced by 50% from £15.49 to £7.75, Arc du Rhone Chateauneuf du Pape, reduced by 40% from £21.49 to £12.89 and a case of six of six bottles of Fine Claret, reduced by 50% from £84.44 to £42.22.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
