Alliance Wine signs up Valencian winery

18 August, 2014

Alliance Wine has signed up Valencia-based artisanal producer Celler del Roure.

The winery makes a range of wines from indigenous Valencian grape varieties such as the red Mando and white Verdil – grapes that were facing extinction before Celler del Roure helped regenerate plantings.

It ages wines in traditional clay jars called tinajas, which the producer says makes “relaxed, integrated wines”.

Alliance Wine Spanish buyer Garech Byrne said: “We are really pleased to have Celler del Roure in our portfolio as these are truly delicious and interesting artisanal wines, made by great people. They offer something totally different from Spain and we are looking forward to introducing them to the UK market.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
