Glenmorangie launches "most exclusive" whisky

10 July, 2014

Glenmorangie has released a 34-year-old whisky called Pride 1978 that it describes as its “most exclusive” launch ever.

It retails for £3,900 and there will be just 700 bottles worldwide, going to luxury specialists and department stores in the UK.

The new edition started as a vintage 19-year-old whisky before being matured for a further 15 years further in casks that had once contained a Grand Cru claret. Only five casks were laid down.

Creator Dr Bill Lumsden, director of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie, said: “The resulting liquid is a luxurious burnished copper with rich, decadent and delicious scents of chestnut, toffee and cherries. I believe this is my most exquisite expression yet, one that will be savoured by whisky enthusiasts across the globe.”

To mark the release of Glenmorangie’s rarest single malt, artist Idris Khan has created a piece of artwork called Disappearing Casks to accompany the purchase.

Khan said: “When visiting the distillery in Tain I was immediately mesmerised. The vision of the casks has stayed with me and provided inspiration for Disappearing Casks. I was born the same year that the casks were laid down and it feels very fitting that I am helping to tell its story.”

Glenmorangie Pride 1978 is bottled at 47.4% abv.

There’s no sign the bubble is about to burst either. Growth at Christmas 2016 was £22.4 million, so gin has increased its value growth nearly two-and-a-half times in a year. The spirit added more value to
