Distil reports drop in sales

Blavod vodka firm Distil has reported an operating loss of £367,000 and falling sales.

Turnover was down from £3.8 million to £2.4 million in the year to March 31, impacted by the end of agency agreements with drinks brand owners Babco and Bruichladdich.

The operating loss was down on the previous year when it was in excess of £600,000.

Distil said it had seen promising sales of its own brands, with Red Leg spiced rum ahead by 37% and Blackwood’s gin 36%.

Diva vodka and Jago – the liqueur created by Tom Jago, father of Tesco wine boss Dan – are nearing relaunch in the UK after a redesign.

The company said it had raised additional working capital and was now “well-placed to concentrate on growing sales”.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
