Rioja wine region reports record sales

10 June, 2014

Wines of Rioja has reported record wine sales for 2013 and said that the UK remains its most important export market with 328,000 hl shipped to the UK.

Exports now account for 37% of total wine sales from the region, and a third of that goes to the UK.

President Luis Alberto Lecea Blanco said: “The UK is by far the largest importer of Rioja, representing a third of sales outside Spain, making it one of the priority markets in the promotional policy.

“The most outstanding activity of the UK campaign was the sixth edition of the successful Rioja Tapas Fantásticas festival, held in London. This food and wine outdoor festival is attended by 15,000 people and has received three major awards for best wine promotional event.

“Both in the UK and in Germany, which holds the second place in the ranking with 184,000 hl, the variation with respect to the previous year has been minimal.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
