Summer wine is in the pink

Wine sales are in the pink for summer with a series of launches.

Rioja’s Bodegas Ramón Bilbao has released what it says is one of the first pale dry rosés from Spain on the international market.

The wine, Ramón Bilbao Rosé 2013, is made from Garnacha grapes using the saignée method and is targeted at independents and the on-trade through Ellis Wines, rrp £9.35.

Marketing director Raquel Zaldivar said: “Spanish rosés found on the export market have tended to be quite deep pink in colour, and with a fruit forward taste profile. Our winemaker, Rodolfo Bastida, realised that the pale, dry rosé we were all drinking at home in Rioja is actually a perfect match for the salmon pink wines from the south of France that are gaining so much popularity around the world." 

France’s Les Vignobles Foncalieu has launched a collection of 2013 rosés in time for summer.

They include AOC Corbières Le Rosé de la Marquise (£15); Vallée des Pins from AOC Coteaux d’Aix en Provence (£9.99); Le Versant Grenache Rosé from IGP Pays d’Oc (£7.99); and Domaine Haut-Gleon 2012 from IGP Vallée du Paradis (£13.95).

UK sales manager Marie-Annick Consola said: “Rosé sales at Les Vignobles Foncalieu continue to rise rapidly year on year. Last year, they reached nearly 25% of Foncalieu’s total production.”

Champagne Thiénot has released a limited edition bottle for its brut rosé NV. It features a pastel pink label with Japanese-inspired motifs and a co-ordinated cooling jacket.

Argentinian brand Viñalba has added a rosé to its range. The 80% Syrah/20% Grenache blend is made in a restrained Provençal style and retails for £11.99.
