Supermarket own label wines clean up at IWC

Supermarket own-brand wines scooped 360 medals at the International Wine Challenge, with Marks & Spencer leading the pack with 138 gongs.

The retailer won six golds, 50 silvers and 82 bronze medals.

Sainsbury’s and Waitrose were each awarded four gold medals, delighting the judges with their “great value bubbly”.

Sainsbury’s 2013 Taste the Difference Conegliano Prosecco Superiore Brut, retailing at £9.99, scooped a gold, along with three Waitrose Champagnes: Blanc de Blancs Brut, Blanc de Noirs Brut and 2004 Brut Special Reserve.

Tesco won three golds for its Viña Mara Rioja Gran Reserva, 2009 Dessert Semillon and 2013 North Row Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc.

Morrisons also took three golds after impressing with fortified and sweet wines including two sherries and a Morrisons Signature Alsace Gewürztraminer 2012.

Aldi received  a gold for its £5.25 Caversham cream sherry and for its Minarete Ribera Del Duero Roble 2012.

Asda received a single gold for its Asda Koru Sauvignon Blanc 2012 from New Zealand, which retails at around £6.

The Co-operative Group was awarded five silvers and 12 bronzes.

Co-chairman Charles Metcalfe said: “The calibre of wines from the supermarket own-brand ranges has been phenomenal this year.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
