Origin Wine stresses importance of auditing

South African supplier Origin Wine is celebrating after passing three crucial audits in the past week.

It secured the A level for the British Retail Consortium audit, the Higher Level for the International Featured Standards audit and the Blue Level at the Tesco audit.

Bernard Fontannaz, founder of Origin Wine, said: “To become a top exporter, you need to deliver some good quality wine, that goes without saying and it is a given, however, that is a necessary condition but not a sufficient one, you need to be able to offer, beside the expected service, the full compliance, at the highest level, to the various codes of practice and standards in place.

“The time where retailers will buy from brokers or, part and pieces on the bulk market, is over, no retailer can and will afford that risk, traceability and compliance is the determining factor.”

UK sales director Jon Woodriffe added: “If you want to be a key player and a close partner of the retailers in UK, which we are, you need to prove that you are worth it and that you are reliable to be trusted with the most valuable of all, the retailers own brand, it is a condition of trading at the highest level.”

Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
