Diageo urges Britain to remain in EU

19 February, 2014

Diageo has warned that Britain leaving the EU could lead to dwindling Scotch whisky exports and impede the UK’s economic recovery.

The Scotch whisky export industry contributes £135 to British coffers every second, but Diageo said it would be harder to sell products like Bell’s and Johnnie Walker without the benefits of EU trade advantages.

Chief executive Ivan Menezes said: “The major benefit for Diageo, for our industry, is in global trade and in having the EU as a significant bloc promoting global trade.

“We benefit from, and support the UK being in the EU.”

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
