SH Jones Wines has added to its growing empire by snapping up the wholesale and retail arm of Stevens Garnier.

The wholesale operations of both companies have been merged, while the addition of Stevens Garnier’s Oxford store – called Grape Ideas – brings the SH Jones retail chain to five.

The Oxfordshire-based family business also has outlets in Bicester and Leamington Spa and two in Banbury.

Last year SH Jones purchased the Hawkshead and Slurp online businesses and chairman Richard Jones said: “While we are continuously looking for growth opportunities to benefit our retail and trade customers, our current priority is to deliver the best possible customer service and ensure they get maximum value from these new acquisitions.”

He said the staff at Stevens Garnier’s shop on Botley Road, Oxford, have been taken on “to provide a seamless transition of the business”, while customer services and warehousing will be consolidated at its Banbury warehouse.

Stevens Garnier said the sale would make SH Jones its key supply customer in the region.

Managing director Matt Douglas said: “The sale of our wholesale and retail business in Oxford to SH Jones means we can now focus fully on our strategic objective of becoming a strong supply partner to wholesalers throughout the UK.

“Part of our portfolio is exclusively selected for the important independent retail and on-trade sectors. Supporting the independent retail and on-trade sectors via a national network of wholesalers is an important part of our strategy.”

Faith in fakes

One of the most fascinating stories in wine, fit to stand alongside the Judgement of Paris, is that of Rudy Kurniawan, a man who managed to fool friends, auction houses and experts into believing they were drinking some of the world’s most expensive wines.
