Surrey brewer launches craft lager

03 December, 2013

Surrey brewer Hogs Back has launched a 4.5% abv unpasteurised craft lager called Hogstar that will be listed at Majestic, Wine Rack, Budgens, Co-op and Booker.

It retails at £1.85 per bottle and has a golden yellow colour, a fuller and fruitier taste than most lagers and a lightly spicy aftertaste.

Hogs Back chairman Rupert Thompson said: “Hogstar’s launch is right at the beginning of what will be a major and exciting change in the lager market, with many new lagers challenging the old global brands.

“Our aim is to attract a younger drinker interested in a greater depth of flavour and aroma, and we have had a very good response from women as well as men.

"We have put particular focus on ingredients, in the hope that our target drinkers will enjoy a lager which combines refreshment, complexity and flavour all in one.”

Thompson gave head brewer Miles Chesterman free rein to explore local food and health stores to seek out interesting herbs, spices and hops for the brew.

He made a shortlist of five brews and consumers chose their favourite as the winner, Hogstar.
