Three US states team up for largest-ever tasting

13 November, 2013

US west coast states California, Oregon and Washington will team up for a joint generic tasting in 2014, creating the most comprehensive tasting of the region’s wines ever available to the UK trade.

The event will be called “Go West!” and will take place on March 17 at the QEII Conference Centre in Westminster, London.

John McLaren, UK director of the Wine Institute of California, said: “We felt that the synergy between the three US west coast regions made the decision to exhibit together really a no-brainer.  Pressure on people’s time and budgets means that one tasting, in one place, at one time makes great sense for wineries, importers and trade buyers.”

Oregon and Washington State have previously held a tasting in January, but they said they were delighted to team up with California and allow the UK trade to compare and contrast the regions.

Rob Andersen, marketing director for the Washington State Wine Commission, said: “There is good enthusiasm from Washington State wine folks for the collaboration, so we're looking forward to a great new London event.”

Dewey Weddington, director of marketing at the Oregon Wine Board, added: “We have built momentum for Oregon wines in the UK over the past seven years and it seems like it’s the right time to take the next steps. We are very excited about this new development.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
