Ilminster independent moves online

25 October, 2013

Ilminster independent Cornhill Wines has shut its doors after 20 years.

Owner Aaron Driver is carrying on the business as an online operation at cornhillwines.co.uk and says he has taken his customers with him.

He said: “I sell to all my old customers. It means I stay in contact with them.”

Driver, who was a chef before he got into retailing, is also hosting wine tasting evenings and dinners, as well as teaching children how to cook in a separate venture.

He told OLN: “I have been running the shop for 20 years and I have had enough. I don’t know how I got into retailing in the first place and my patience was wearing thin – so I thought it would be better to bow out while I’m still on a high.”

During its time in business Cornhill Wines won awards including a trip to Chile for Driver in the first Wines of Chile independents competition in 2010.

The former Cornhill Wines shop is now home to a Fairtrade shop.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
