Jose Alberto Zuccardi accepts the Winemaker’s Winemaker of the Year award on behalf of his son Sebastian Zuccardi, presented by Gaucho’s Director of Wine Phil Crozier and Anthony Rose

Sebastian Zuccardi of Familia Zuccardi was named Winemaker’s Winemaker of the Year at the Gaucho Awards, which celebrated the achievements of Argentine wine at the chain’s flagship Piccadilly restaurant.

Gaucho’s managing director Martin Williams likened the awards to football’s PFA awards – because they give winemakers a chance to recognise the achievements of their peers.

Daniel Pi from Trapiche scooped the Legend award, while Matias Michelini, of Finca Sophenia and Passionate Wines, was named Young Winemaker of the Year.

Manos Negras’ Malbec 2009 was voted Wine of the Year at the awards ceremony, held in conjunction with Wines of Argentina and honouring the best wines in both the on and off-trade following a 12-week judging process.

Bodegas Fabre won the Winery of the Year gong, while Nicolas Audebert, from Cheval des Andes, was named Non-Argentine Winemaker of the Year and Matias Riccitelli took the Brand Innovation award for its Republica Malbec.

Gaucho’s wine director Phil Crozier said Argentine wines “continue to go from strength to strength in the UK”.

Alicia Castro, Argentine ambassador to the UK, added that the wine trade was vital to Argentine exports and praised the industry's achievements in making great inroads into the competitive UK market.

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards.
