Hayman brings distilling in-house

Hayman Distillers has opened a dedicated distillery in Witham, Essex, where it already blended and bottled its gins, and has revamped its packaging.

The distilling process moves from Thames Distillers, in which Hayman continues to hold a 20% stake.

Hayman said considerable sales growth had made it possible for the company to bring distilling in-house.

The new traditional 450-litre copper pot still has been named Marjorie, in memory of chairman Christopher Hayman’s mother, who introduced him to the family business but died young.

Hayman said: “We are delighted to be unveiling our own dedicated still, ‘Marjorie’, at our distillery in Witham. Had my mother been here today, I know she would have been very proud of the work we have put into opening the distillery. 

“All Hayman’s gins are now distilled in Witham and will continue to be bottled there, as previously. We are very pleased to have our own dedicated still as it gives us much better control over the production. Our process remains the same, for example we steep the botanicals for a full day prior to distillation, which is what gives our gins their distinctive flavour.”  

The new look packaging aims to emphasise Hayman’s history as a family gin distiller since 1863, and features an updated logo, new labels and a new bottle design based on a bespoke bottle from 1947 discovered in the brand’s archives.

The core range – Hayman’s London Dry Gin, Old Tom, Sloe Gin and Royal Dock Navy Strength already feature the new look. The rest of the range, including Hayman’s 1850 Reserve and Gin Liqueur, will follow soon.
