Sales boost for Cape and Spain
Favourable prices have boosted sales of South African and Spanish, wines according to the latest Nielsen data released by the Wine & Spirit Trade Association.
But Italy has taken a knock as supermarkets shifted focus away from the country.
Sales of South African wine rose 14% in volume in the year to August 17, with Spain up 13%. Italy saw an 11% decline in sales over the same period.
Both fifth-placed Spain, with sales of 873,000hl, and sixth-ranked South Africa, on 787,000, closed the gap on the USA and France, running neck and neck for third and fourth place in the off-trade with shipments of 980,000hl each.
Australia and Italy retained the top two spots. Total wine volumes were down 2% over the year, with red, white and rosé sales all showing a fall.
Champagne sales fell 4% but other sparkling wine was the only drinks category to show volume growth over both the whole year (+10%) and the last three months (+12%).
The summer boost for sales of beer and cider impacted on spirits, which saw volumes decline 1% over the 12 weeks to August 17, although value sales were up 4% on the back of duty-driven price increases.
