Rioja wines to hold first UK tasting

04 September, 2013

More than 100 Rioja wineries are teaming up to hold a generic trade tasting in the UK for the first time.

There will be more than 650 red, white and rosé wines on taste at Wines from Rioja’s inaugural event – making it the biggest collection of Rioja wines ever shown under one roof in the UK.

Around 20 producers who are not yet represented in the UK will show wines alongside some 90 who are already present here.

Among the more unusual wines will be a 100% Malvasia and three 100% Tempranillo Blanco wines, as well as more than 20 100% Graciano reds and more than 30 with a Garnacha majority.

There will also be a vertical tasting of Gran Reserva wines from vintages rated “excellent” over the past 20 years, and a section called Rioja in Retail, showing off to the press the diverse collection of Rioja wines available in shops.

Ricardo Aguiriano, marketing director for the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja, said: “There is great excitement in Rioja to be bringing the region’s wines to London on a scale never seen before.

“The genuine enthusiasm and appetite for such an event is reflected in the exceptionally high number of wineries taking part.

“We’re all looking forward to welcoming the UK press and trade to the tasting in October, and we’re sure that all visitors will relish the opportunity to taste so many Rioja wines, and meet so many of the faces behind the wines.”

The tasting is to take place at Oxo2 on London’s Southbank on October 9. Find out more at
