Cider and lager sales enjoying purple patch

The glorious sunshine that has bathed Britain this month has led to a surge in cider and lager sales, according to various leading suppliers.

Helen Stares of market analyst firm Nielsen told OLN: “Early indications are that the heatwave has had a huge impact on sales of cider and lager versus a year ago.”

Crawford Sinclair, UK sales director at Innis & Gunn, said he had been in meetings with major grocers who have reported booming sales.

“They have noticed a big upsurge in beer and cider sales,” he said. “When the sun shines people look for that refreshment, session opportunity and cider fits that perfectly. The big brewers with the cider and session lager are having a purple patch.

“Craft beer is enjoying good growth too.”

Amanda Grabham, head of brand marketing at Merrydown, added: “We are seeing positive effects across all our brands.

“The impact the weather has on sales is phenomenal.”

Neil Jardine, director of take-home at Greene King, said: “The effect the weather has is remarkable and we are noticing double-digit growth in our take home portfolio.

“The sunny weather puts everyone in a good mood and makes them want to socialise.”

Ian Lewis, head of marketing at Westons cider, added that “buoyed by some extraordinary weather, sales in July alone are growing by over 50%”.
