Cambride Wine Merchants in sustainability push

09 July, 2013

Cambridge Wine Merchants is running a wine festival involving tastings, masterclasses, promotions and education on the theme of sustainability throughout July.

Each week the shops will focus on on a different winery that has emerged as a global leader in sustainability.

These include the Esporao winery in Portugal, Famille Perrin winery in France, and Torres wineries in Spain, Chile and the US.

Cambridge Wine Merchants won OLN’s Drinks Retailing Award for Best Independent Retailer this year and wants to follow up its national recognition by growing its local support base during Independent Retailer Month.

Managing Director Hal Wilson said: “Promoting sustainable wineries is vital to the future of the wine industry, and promoting independent retailers in Cambridge is vital to the sustainability of the city centre. We all want to maintain the unique character of the place.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
