Bancroft pushing premium New Zealand wine

Bancroft has taken on a new winery that produces premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling from New Zealand’s Central Otago.

Domaine Rewa produces the three grapes biodynamically on a 5.5ha estate planted in 1997.

Marketing manager Claire Scott-Gall said: “This is the first vintage and we are very pleased with it and we are sure the quality will continue to improve.

“The wines have great packaging and have a great story. They are biodynamic and hand-crafted wines that give them a fantastic point of difference compared to bigger brands.

“They provide something a little unusual and stylistically they are more Burgundian than New World.”

The winery’s owner, Philippa Shepherd, is a Francophile and aimed to create New Zealand wines with a Gallic twist to blend the best of old and new worlds.

The 2011 Chardonnay retails at £26.90, the 2011 Pinot Noir is priced at £32.30 and the 2011 Riesling retails at £21.50.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
