SH Jones buys Slurp

25 June, 2013

Online wine, beer and spirits retailer Slurp has been bought by Oxfordshire wine merchant SH Jones.

The deal is the second online acquisition by Jones this year, following the purchase of Hawkshead Wines in January.

Slurp was set up in 2006 and operates separate sites for the UK, France and Asia.

It tried to establish a point-of-difference in wine retailing through such features as single bottle delivery, daily deals and, for a brief period, flash promotions where deals were available for just a few minutes and publicised on social media.

Greg Shaw, former owner of Hawkshead and now commercial manager at Jones, said: “The addition of Slurp is a very exciting development and gives a very strong presence in online retailing – and the base to develop the business further in the future.

“Hawkshead has an oustanding reputaion for customer services and combining this with Slurp’s innovative and extensive range we believe SH Jones will become one of the country’s leading internet retailers.

“We discovered vey early on during the integration of Hawshead and Jones that the strengths and synergies of bringing together an online business and a traditional bricks and mortar business can be a very successful combination.”

SH Jones is based in Banbury where it has two shops. It also has branches in Bicester and Leamington Spa.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
