New ginger beer brand aims to help the homeless

A former Greene King marketing manager has launched a 4% abv ginger beer brand that will donate a share of its profits to charities like Centrepoint that tackle homelessness. 

Hawkes comes in a 50cl bottle with a screw cap and is inspired by tales of 19th Century London “hawkers” who roamed the streets selling ginger beer. 

Founder Simon Wright said: “Listening to the experiences of a young homeless woman I met and realising how lucky I am was all the inspiration I needed to create Hawkes and find partners like Centrepoint. There’s a chance we can really make a difference and create a unique win-win for everyone. 

“Retailers get a category enhancing brand, which they can be proud to sell and drinkers get a beautiful drinking experience with the knowledge it’s bringing social good. I started Hawkes knowing that I needed to create a great liquid and marry that with a brand that clearly stands for something and is built on a set of values and ethics. I’m really looking forward to working with like- minded partners and seeing where the journey takes us.”

Hawkes is focused on growing its distribution throughout London in 2013 and is also targeting major multiples.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
