Tesco ramps up premium spirits offering in affluent stores
The Tesco spirits team has selected 30 premium spirits from across the globe to add to shelves after it was buoyed by growth in the category.
Kavalan, the first Taiwanese whisky to be sold by a major retailer, will line up alongside Old Pulteney 21 Year Old – winner of the 2012 Whisky Bible award for World Whisky of the Year – among others.
Spirits buyer Oliver Stevens said: “We are seeing steady, consistent growth in the premium spirits category and the response from our customers suggests that there is a real potential to open up the top end of the market.
“Kavalan has been included within the range because of its exceptional taste as well as its popularity amongst the team. It provides a completely different style of malt whisky from others in the range, offering something new to our customers.
"Asian whisky is becoming increasingly popular in the UK – we have had great success with the Japanese whisky Yamazaki.
“By introducing Kavalan Tesco is giving its customers the opportunity to experience a broader variety of styles.”
Other new products listed include The Glenlivet 16 Year Old Nadurra Single Malt 70cl and Havana Club Selection de Maestros 70cl.
Tesco added that following the success of the fine wine bins introduced into a number of the more affluent Tesco stores, the decision was made to range spirits in a similar way.
The increased range of premium spirits will be available in 50 Tesco stores, determined by the demographic of the stores’ customers.
