Distell takes over Burn Stewart

South African wine and spirits producer Distell has paid £160 million to buy Scotch whisky firm Burn Stewart Distillers.

The deal gives Distell control of Black Bottle and Scottish Leader blended whisky as well as the malts Bunnahabhain, Deanston, Tobermory and Ledaig.

Distell and Burn Stewart have operated a joint venture to market Bunnahabhain, Scottish Leader and Black Bottle in sub-Saharan Africa since 2007.

The South African company – whose own portfolio includes Bisquit Cognac, Savanna cider and a multitude of wine brands including Fleur du Cap, Drostdy-Hof and Nederburg – is buying 100% of the Burn Stewart share capital from Scottish-based Hine Cognac producer CL World Brands and bitters and rum producer Angostura of Trinidad & Tobago.

Distell managing director Jan Scannell said: “Our acquisition is a very significant development from a strategic perspective but also given the rich and proud history and heritage of the brands involved.
“We have a acquired a business with a portfolio of strong brands, backed by a sound production and marketing team.

“Their expertise is integral to the ongoing success of Burn Stewart.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
