Be the best in beer with OLN

22 March, 2013

Entries are now open for this year’s International Beer Challenge, organised by Off Licence News.

Producers have until May 17 to make their submissions, which will be judged by a panel of expert judges chaired by Jeff Evans, the former editor of the Good Beer Guide.

The competition is now in its 17th year and has consistently rewarded and championed excellence in brewing.

Last year producers from 26 different countries – from brewing heartlands to upcoming nations – entered hundreds of lagers, ales, stouts and speciality beers.

Judges from across Europe include some of the shrewdest beer experts in the trade – retailers, importers, publicans, brewers, writers and flavour analysts.

They study each beer in turn, considering the appearance, aroma, taste and finish, and for a beer to achieve a kind of medal from these exacting critics is a real achievement.

Last year they awarded 178 bronze medals, 95 silvers and 30 gold medals, before overall trophy winners were decided.

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards. The results are top secret until the awards dinner on February 6 but it’s giving nothing away to report that the overall standard of those that will be revealed in the shortlist of finalists in the January issue of DRN is higher than it’s ever been.
