McGuigan and MasterChef host to launch app

30 January, 2013

Winemaker Neil McGuigan has teamed up with MasterChef host John Torode to create a food and wine matching service which consumers can access from their smart phones.

They hail from the same region of Australia – Hunter Valley – and have long been friends.

Therefore joining forces to create a service geared towards matching their areas of expertise seemed a logical step.

But they promised to take the “ponciness” out of enjoying food and wine in a bid to make it more accessible for the masses.

McGuigan, the IWSC International Winemaker of the Year, said: “We know from experience that one person’s food and wine ambrosia may leave another cold and so we were determined to find a way of personalising recommendations to satisfy people’s individual tastes.

“John has put together a superb range of recipes – dishes that show you how to deliver in some cases very quickly and with a minimum of fuss and preparation.

“My absolute favourite is John’s grilled salmon with dill mayonnaise and I chose to match it with our zesty and citrus Semillon Blanc. That’s my idea of heaven but yours will be different and that is just the way it should be.”

The John Torode and Neil McGuigan Recipe Collection will launch nationwide on smart phones in February.

Torode said: “With more people now entertaining and cooking from scratch at home, we felt it really was about time that people were given easier access to clear, simple and fun food and wine matching advice. Neil is one of the most astute readers of the public palate and tastes around and being able to collaborate in this way and with the latest techniques is so exciting.”

The shops that stand out from the madding crowd

The judges met last week to sort out the winners in the independent categories of our 2018 Drinks Retailing Awards. The results are top secret until the awards dinner on February 6 but it’s giving nothing away to report that the overall standard of those that will be revealed in the shortlist of finalists in the January issue of DRN is higher than it’s ever been.
