Tasting offers retailers small-batch French wines

22 January, 2013

Retailers are invited to taste wines from small, terroir-driven French producers at the fourth annual First Date for France tasting in London next month.

The tasting will take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on Tuesday, February 12.

Retailers can also meet the producers in person and learn more about the wines on offer.

Gersende Pommery, senior project manager at event organiser Sopexa, said: “The tasting is a relaxed yet informative day and a real opportunity to taste some new wines from passionate and enthusiastic French producers.

“We have already got a fantastic line-up for this year’s tasting and are looking forward to sharing the wines with the UK trade for the first time.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
