Spanish producer gains first UK-wide distribution deal

04 January, 2013

PLB has added premium Ribera del Duero producer Protos to its Spanish portfolio, giving the company its first UK-wide distribution agreement.

Protos was set up as a co-operative in 1927 and today it owns 180ha of vineyards, with access to a further 800ha, around Valladolid and Peñafiel.

PLB will import its full portfolio of wines, including Protos Joven Roble, which combines Tempranillo and American oak for an easy drinking style.

Iberia Buyer Jaime Delage said: “We felt we had space for a strong brand from Ribera del Duero, and are confident that Protos fills this: they make a wide portfolio of wines with the heritage and prestige that we know our customers are looking for.”

Protos will be exclusive to the independent channel and the on-trade.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
