Cider industry stalwart dies

David Hartley, a veteran of 34 years in the cider industry, has passed away.

Hartley was Westons’ business development manager for the east of England.

He joined Westons in June 2006 as a business development manager for the on-trade, having previously worked at HP Bulmer.

Helen Thomas, managing director at Westons, said: “David was one of the most experienced members of our Commercial team and his loss is being felt throughout our business.

“Our thoughts are with David’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

Hartley died on December 22 and is survived by his wife Mary.

The funeral will take place at 12 noon on Monday, January 14, at Cambridge City Crematorium, Huntingdon Road, Girton, Cambridge, CB3 0JJ.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
