Morrisons set to name wine chief

14 December, 2012

Morrisons is in the final stages of recruiting a new head for its wine team as it steps up its presence in the category.

The supermarket has pledged to make wine pivotal to its offer and the successful candidate will contribute across the department, reporting into Steve Mosey, BWS category director.

The move follows the departure of wine development manager Arabella Woodrow MW, who left the retailer in September after the team was restructured.

Mosey said: “We want someone who can look after the usual range and make sure we have the right level of wines. But we also want them to oversee the UK-bottled wines and drive NPD.

“I admire some of the things Tesco has done, like getting Fiano in and making some noise in the market. How do you get on trends like that? That’s the inspiration. We’re building the team and it’s not quite there yet, but we have big aspirations for wine.”

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
