Marston’s Armistice Ale to raise money for remembrance appeal

Marston’s is donating 2,000 bottles of a special bottled ale to help raise funds for a centre of remembrance run by the Royal British Legion.

The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire welcomes 300,000 visitors each year and admissions will spike during the Armistice commemoration period in November.

Entry is free but the centre would be forced to charge if it could not raise enough funds to keep it going.

The Marston’s Armistice Ale 2012, a 3.6% abv Burton pale ale, will be on sale from now until the end of the year at the centre’s restaurant and gift shop.

It costs £2.25 per bottle or £15 for a case of eight.

Charles Bagot Jewitt, chief executive for the National Memorial Arboretum, explained: “Many of our visitors have a personal reason for wanting to explore this special place and to remember loved ones or comrades.

“As well as paying their respects, some also want the opportunity to raise a glass in tribute to their family, friends and colleagues. The creation of this new ale is a wonderful gesture by Marston’s as through buying it, people will be contributing directly to its future.”

“I hope that it serves as a fitting tribute to our armed forces by raising a glass in celebration of the comradeship of those who have served their country, and to the memory of those who are not forgotten.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
