Cox leaves New Zealand Winegrowers

New Zealand Winegrowers has parted company with its European director David Cox.

In a statement released by the organisation in New Zealand overnight, it said Cox had left “to pursue other interests and projects”.

Global marketing director Chris Yorke said: “We will be recruiting for a successor to drive our exciting projects in Europe.”

He added: “In the UK, New Zealand wine is in good shape – we are showing the biggest growth in value share for a New World country and, at £6.33, have the highest average retail price per bottle.

“In mainland Europe, New Zealand Winegrowers is working in partnership with New Zealand Trade & Enterprise to launch and build the New Zealand wine brand in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

”We will be looking for an experienced, credible wine marketer who wants to be part of the next stage of New Zealand wine’s growth in Europe.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
