Oddbins launches search for the UK's top amateur wine tasters

29 May, 2012

Oddbins is launching a national competition to find the UK’s best amateur wine tasters.

The Palate will take place over five rounds including a tasting boot camp with a celebrity wine critic.

Three winners will receive holidays to some of the world’s most famous wine-making regions.

To enter the first round, customers have to register at any Oddbins store on the weekends of June 2-3 or June 9-10.

The competition is being promoted online with a video fronted by Dave Groves, store manager at Crouch End in north London, with the slogan What Does Victory Taste Like?

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
