Wine Shed owner Guy Wilkes dies

05 April, 2012

Guy Wilkes, owner of Somerset wine merchant the Wine Shed, has died of pancreatic cancer aged 49.

Wilkes started his career with Hedges & Butler, then joined Griersons and later Geoffrey Roberts Associates, before spending 12 years working for Negociants.

Wines of Chile European director Michael Cox, who worked with Wilkes at Negociants, said: “Guy was my right-hand man at Negociants UK for 11 years, and was a close and loyal friend.

“The wine trade has lost a genuinely nice, honest, laconic man, full of integrity and charisma. His courage in facing his awful illness has been moving and humbling, but his family will cherish the high esteem in which Guy is held by his many friends and colleagues in the trade.”

Wilkes is survived by his wife Shelley and three children.

His funeral will take place at 11am on April 13 at Taunton Deane Crematorium in Taunton. His family welcome donations to St Margaret’s Hospice (somerset-hospice.org.uk) and Pancreatic Cancer UK (pancreaticcancer.org.uk).
