UK to host its first Riesling Summit

27 March, 2012

Wines of Germany is to hold a Riesling Summit in the UK for the first time.

The day-long trade event is to take place in Central London on June 27 and will include a panel debate on Germany’s place in the emerging lower-alcohol category, a showcase tasting of modern German Rieslings from some of the country’s young winemakers, a series of masterclasses from top producers and German wine experts and a tasting comparing Rieslings from around the world.

Wines of Germany’s UK managing director Nicky Forrest said: “With responsible drinking high on the political agenda right now, German Riesling should be on the radar of every wine retailer as it ticks all the boxes of what today’s consumers are looking for.

“With the Riesling Summit, we hope to engage with the trade and show the opportunities for German Riesling both in the on and off-trade.

“With growing support for Riesling evident from the many fan groups popping up all over the world, we’re looking to harness this support to get consumers to see German wines in a different light and give German Riesling a go.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
