Waitrose scoops five gongs at 2012 Drinks Retailing Awards

Waitrose has scooped five awards in OLN's Drinks Retailing Awardsá-ááincluding the Lifetime Achievement Award, which went to Dee Blackstock MW.

The retailer also picked up prizes for Supermarket of the Year, Drinks Buying Team of the Year, Multiple Beer Retailer of the Year and a new award for Champagne Retailer of the Year.

Among the independents, new faces included the Whalley Wine Shop, a former Threshers which was named Independent Drinks Retailer of the Year, and Favourite Beers, a former Bottoms Up, which won Independent Beer Retailer of the Year.

Barnsley-based Rhythm & Booze was named Multiple Specialist Chain of the Year, while the Oxford Wine Company won the coveted Independent Wine Retailer of the Year award.

There were alsoáprizes for past winners - Cheshire-based Corks Out won Independent Spirits Retailer of the Year, the Jug & Bottle in Bubwith, North Yorkshire, was named Independent Cider Retailer of the Year and the Whisky Exchange, which had won the Independent Spirits category for three years in a row, was named Online Retailer of the Year.

Another new award was Green or Ethical Retailer of the Year, which went to Sainsbury's.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
