Low-alcohol boost for Tesco

Low-alcohol wine sales in Tesco grew 3.4% to 1.9 million bottles over Christmas 2011, from 1.8 million bottles the year before.

The growth in sales of wines ranging from 0% to 5.5% abv came after the supermarket boosted its range with a number of new listings in September.

Wine category buying manager Claire Lorains said: “At Tesco we remain committed to helping customers drink responsibly. We offer a broad range of wine products to meet all customer needs and see the lighter-style wine market as an important and increasingly popular emerging category.” 

The range includes First Cape Café Collection, Banrock Station Light, Beachcomber, Encounter Bay and Eisberg.

Tesco also recently launched a range of 2.8% abv beers to grow its lighter alcohol offering.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
