Pre-mix Challenge results revealed

11 January, 2012

Pre-mixed drinks scooped a host of awards in the 2012 Pre-mixed Drinks Challenge, run by OLN’s sister paper Drinks International.

Five gold medals were awarded – to Sierra Margarita from Borco International, Coppa Cocktails Strawberry Daiquiri by Toorank, Piña Colada and Strawberry Daiquiri from Funkin and Manchester Drinks’ My Cocktail Mojito.

The winners were chosen from products entered from New Zealand, Mexico, France, Holland, Germany, the US and the UK by a panel of judges in a blind tasting.

The judges were Dave Broido, senior trainer at Shaker UK, WSET marketing manager Chris Kelly, Hi Spirits brand ambassador Andy Dennett, Bacardi Brown-Forman product training and mixology head Ian McLaren, Bar Wizards co-owner Neil Garner and Hamish Smith, news editor of Drinks International.

The drinks were judged in five categories: Classic Alcoholic Drink/Mixer Combo, Contemporary Alcoholic Drink/Mixer Combo, Ready-Made Classic Cocktail, Classic Cocktails – consumer adds alcohol, and Others.

There was also a design and packaging round. Judges reported that the drinks that scored highly tended to contain fresh fruit rather than not synthetic flavourings, discernible spirits, and to stick to the traditional ingredients of the cocktail. They felt the category was diversifying and becoming increasingly ambitious in what it will take on.

At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016. There’s no sign the bubble is about to burst either. Growth at Christmas 2016 was £22.4 million, so gin has increased its value growth nearly two-and-a-half times in a year.
