Spanish wine exports to UK increase

29 September, 2011

The UK has consolidated its position as Spanish wine’s number two export market, behind Germany.

Official figures show the value of exports to the UK rose by €125.5 million in the first six months of this year.

The data, published by Spanish Wine Market Supervisory Board, said global exports over the period were up 29% by volume and 20% by value.

Germany, the UK and the US account for 40% of Spanish wine exports.

Wines from Spain said: “The excellent results registered by Spanish wine sales abroad are the result of intense marketing campaigns carried out by organisations such as ICEX, autonomous region marketing and public relations departments, and Spanish wine region regulating councils.

“In addition, as might be expected, the boost in sales also coincides with the growing recognition reaped by Spanish wines in international competitions.”
