Fine wine store set to open in City

13 July, 2011

London restaurant operator D&D is planning to open a fine wine store in the City as part of the redevelopment of a building originally created by the East India Company.

The Old Bengal Warehouse in New Street, EC2, was built in 1771 and will be transformed into two restaurants, bars and a high-end wine merchant.

The shop will specialise in Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, the company said, and will open in spring 2012.

Des Gunewardena, chairman and chief executive of D&D London, said: “This is an exceptional building with a fascinating history. It is the first of the spice warehouses to be built by the East India Company in the City.

“With the upper parts of the building now successfully developed as luxury apartments, we are very excited to be doing our bit to bring the ground floor and courtyard spaces to life.”
