Portugal blitzes indies for National Wine Month

07 April, 2011

Independent retailers have received financial help to promote Portuguese wines during National Wine Month.

The money comes from ViniPortugal and will be used to help organise in-store and online promotions throughout May.

ViniPortugal will also use social media to raise awareness and create excitement about Portuguese wines during this period.

It hopes retailers will run wine tastings, food matching events, wine fairs, discounts and competitions.

Retailers involved include Bottle Apostle, Vinoteca, SH Jones, Hanging Ditch, Handford Wines, Duncan Murray Wines, Corks Out, Corks of Cotham, Chez Vin, Barrica Wines, Halifax Wine Company, Venus, Cambridge Wine Merchants, Marta Vine and Connolly’s.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
