Tracking system to have wider scope

A pilot of a serial code system to track Australian wine through the supply chain is to be extended.

Constellation and Diageo have been working on the scheme with British and Australian Customs, the World Customs Office and the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, and other stakeholders are to be brought in to see if it can operate with more complexity.

The system assigns a unique serial shipment container code (SSCC) to shipment units of any size - pallets, containers or cases - to give higher levels of traceability.

Philip Goodband, consultant Master of Wine at Constellation, said: "The SSCC will great simplify and clarify data exchange and allow faster and more secure retrieval within the various IT systems through which the product information flows en route to its final destination."

John Corbet-Milward, head of technical and international affairs at the WSTA, said: "This is a world first. The implications for trade facilitation in our sector are considerable. It will enable traders and Customs to keep far closer tabs on product as it moves through the supply chain."

Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
