Bordeaux sales are booming

Bordeaux wine sales have grown by 11 per cent over the year, driven by a mounting interest in château brands, according to the region's marketing team.

Figures released by Nielsen show that value sales were up 11 per cent in the year to July 31, and volumes were up 6 per cent.

Brands now account for almost 70 per cent of the value share, compared to 50 per cent three years ago, and the value of Bordeaux brands grew by 20 per cent last year.

CIVB marketing director Pascal Loridon said: "These figures are very encouraging, especially now that the price of a bottle of branded Bordeaux - typically a château wine - is £5.56 on average, compared to the average of £4.23 for French wine and £3.97 for all wine. This confirms that UK consumers are prepared to pay that little bit extra for the quality and the variety of wine produced in Bordeaux."

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
