Inaugural Buyers' Tasting proves to be innovation hit

05 October, 2007

Wine agencies and buyers have said the first

Major Buyers' Tasting,

new releases in a n informal environment, was worthwhile and well organised.

Organiser Judy Kendrick, who also runs the successful Specialist Importers Trade Tastings, said: "The intention was to create a completely stress-free environment for visitors so

they could have time to talk to their suppliers without being pulled from pillar to post."

Claire Summersby, marketing director at PLB, said: "All the agents we spoke to were very pleased with how it went. It's very good to focus, especially if you think the market is relatively flat so innovation is very important, and everything there had to be new otherwise you couldn't show it.

"There were very few buyers

who didn't turn up and I think that says a lot."

Waitrose buyer Nick Room said: "This was a worthwhile inaugural event that was sufficiently interesting for new products and range, but lacked some key players.

"What I liked about it was that Judy did keep it focused and intimate - so the event was very easy to navigate."

Morrisons buyer Suzie Cornwell said the event was well organised, although she found the round tables difficult to negotiate and would have preferred an event further north for buyers who live a long way from London.

"It was good to see everyone in one room, although it was more like having lots of meetings with suppliers

than going to a tasting as I had mostly tasted the wines on offer before, and most suppliers were concentrating on innovative packaging rather than new wines," she said.
