Majestic to sell half price bubbly this Christmas
Published:  11 October, 2007

Majestic has announced it will run offers on Champagne and sparkling wines again this Christmas with up to 50 per cent off selected brands.

The wine warehouse chain, which opens new stores in Macclesfield and Aberdeen tomorrow, is hoping to remain competitive with other retailers during the festive season by reducing the price of more vintage Champagnes.

Buying director Justin Apthorp said although prices would be lower, there was no way Majestic would be selling Champagne for 5 a bottle as Woolworths did last month.

He said: "It's not good news that people start thinking that you can buy Champagne for 5 a bottle. If you sell it at 9.99 you might just break even. It was good PR, but I can't see how it would do anyone any good at that price."

Among the Champagnes on offer this Christmas will be Duval Leroy 2002 and Heidsieck Gold Top 2002 which will both be sold for 15.99 a bottle when buying two or more.

Sparkling wines Reserve de Chateau de Sours, Cloudy Bay Pelorus 2002 and Green Point ZD Blanc de Blanc will be sold with a 25 per cent discount.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
