Record numbers for South African wine tasting

19 October, 2007

Wines of South Africa’s Mega tasting on Oct 8 and 9 saw an increase in overall visitors of 83 per cent on the 2006 London generic tasting. More than 1000 visitors attended the event at London's Earls' Court. The second Mega tasting also saw a slight increase of 1 percent on the inaugural 2005 event, held at Old Billingsgate.

Overseas visitor figures increased by 200 per cent on the previous Mega tasting, with 142 visitors traveling from European markets, in particular Holland, Sweden and Germany. Demonstrating their commitment to the key export markets, 250 South African producers exhibited at the venue.

WOSA also attracted more than 400 attendees on the evening of Oct 8, which was opened up to the public for the first time. Jo Mason, UK market manager, said: “The consumer evening was a trial for us, but feedback from exhibitors was that it was very useful, particularly from those companies that have wines with good retail distribution.”
