Commission publishes report

The Competition Commission's interim report on the grocery market concludes that the arrival of supermarkets in

high street or local shopping areas had "no identifiable effect" on off-licences. But the analysis did show that the opening

up of convenience stores owned by the major multiples did cause other convenience stores and specialist retailers to close down. The Commission looked at the period from 1999 to 2006.

Retailers warned on tobacco

Scottish retailers should be on the lookout for counterfeit Golden Virginia hand-rolling tobacco . HM Revenue & Customs officers raided a flat in Hill Street, Glasgow, and discovered almost 170kg of illicit tobacco, along with outer wrappers, cellophane and duty stamps , and numerous sealed packs. Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
