Thierry's gift range puts it into words

02 November, 2007

Thierry's has created a range of wines designed to be given as gifts.

The range, called A Wine to Say, features messages such as Happy Birthday, Happy Valentine's Day and Thank You on the labels, accompanied by specially commissioned cartoons. Each bottle also includes a gift tag.

Lynne Whitaker, of consultants Winebrand, who helped develop the concept, said: "Although the idea of wine as a gift may seem obvious, it is actually quite difficult to execute without appearing tacky. This range, developed through extensive research, strikes just the right balance between shelf impact and wine reassurance, and has real commercial potential."

The wines

are from producer Skalli in the Languedoc and have an rrp of 4.99. Thierry's is hoping to achieve distribution in convenience stores and supermarkets.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
