FSC first for private Spanish cork grower

02 November, 2007

Spanish cork grower Oret Sybericultura Group has been granted Forest Stewardship Council certification.

OSG is the first private producer to be awarded the certificate, in recognition of high standards of production, and the guarantee of traceability from forest to bottling. Conservation organisation WWF, which believes cork oak forests should be sustained for environmental reasons, welcomed the move. Co-ordinator for Cork Oak Landscapes programme Nora Berrahmouni said: "We are confident that the success of OSG will compel other cork producers to support their product's place in the market by working towards gaining certificates for their cork forests.

"It is important that consumers recognise that cork is sustainable and ecologically sounds, and the FSC stamp drives this message, through its global recognition, and guarantees of social and environmental responsibility."

Faith in fakes

One of the most fascinating stories in wine, fit to stand alongside the Judgement of Paris, is that of Rudy Kurniawan, a man who managed to fool friends, auction houses and experts into believing they were drinking some of the world’s most expensive wines.
