Coca liqueur will give a real 'buzz'

02 November, 2007

Babco Europe is launching a Bolivian herbal liqueur in the UK.

Agwa is made from coca leaves harvested in Bolivia and shipped to Amsterdam where they are distilled and blended with guarana and ginseng.

Coca is native to South America where native people chew the dried leaves, traditionally with lime, as a stimulant to overcome exhaustion, hunger and thirst.

Agwa is 30 per cent abv and should be drunk after taking a bite of lime. "Lime changes the pH of the mouth, which activates the alkaloids of the coca leaf to produce a powerful oxygen buzz," a spokeswoman said.

From November it will be available through Matthew Clark and a number of other wholesalers .
